LOS ANGELES—A judge sentenced Michael Jackson's doctor to four years in a county jail for his role in the pop singer's 2009 death, calling Conrad Murray "a disgrace to the medical profession" in blistering remarks.

Judge Michael Pastor of Los Angeles Superior Court said Dr. Murray's $150,000-a-month post with the pop star constituted "money-for-medicine madness."

Under guidelines designed to reduce crowding, Dr. Murray will serve less than half of the sentence, the maximum for which he was eligible, a sheriff's department spokesman said.

Prosecutors request Conrad Murray be jailed for four years for killing Michael Jackson


Prosecutors have asked a judge to sentence Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's former doctor, to the maximum four years in prison for his involuntary manslaughter conviction in the singer's 2009 death.

In a separate court filing, defence lawyers for Murray sought to convince Los Angeles trial judge Michael Pastor to sentence their client to probation.
